S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting
Trying to figure out how you are going to Pass on Your Gift? Meeting goals can be a challenge for anyone, especially a busy farmer! To help yourself reach the target, take the time to make sure your goal is a S.M.A.R.T. one.
S – Specific
Identify a specific action that will take place. Think of who, when, where, what, and how. For example – rather than just saying “Do a workshop”, say “Do a cheese-making workshop in the fall with a group of up to 10 participants at my farm.”
M – Measurable
How will you know you have achieved your goal? For example – “I plan on passing on 2 goats in the spring of 2011.”
A – Attainable
Is this a realistic goal? Do you have the resources, knowledge, and time to make it happen?
R – Relevant
Will your gift help others in the farming community through passing on livestock, seed, equipment, or knowledge? Knowing it will make a difference on someone else’s farm can help you meet your goal.
T – Time-bound
Be specific about when you plan to do it and honour your commitment. Vague plans are easy to postpone!
